This is a good introduction to the beauty, passion and atmosphere that is Spanish Guitar Music. True, the pieces are mostly familiar and for some long time fans of Spanish Guitar Music it does not break new ground. But it does have some of the best pieces and composers to represent this genre of Guitar music. This album has strong merit not only for its great repetoire of compositional choices but for its performance and sound. The sound is excellent. Williams has been famous for a "sqeaky clean" technique. This recording is no exception with little polution of mechanical noise in the performance. Instead every note is strongly defined. John Williams is undisputably a wonderful player. Unfortunately maybe, the selection was quite unadventurous, with pieces by such extremely well-known composers such as Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega and Sanz. What is good in Williams' performance is the timing - there is no excessive tempo here to turn the music into a circus act. His tone is perhaps, sometimes, somewhat colder than one would hope. This works very well with some pieces and less well with others. All in all an extremely good cd for the novice in guitar music. Here is a player of international standing and talent, playing music pleasing to the ear and not difficult to follow. I bought this CD for my grandson who plays lead guitar in a rock band and writes his own music to extend and inspire his own repetiore but he was already there. Aged 16yrs and at the grunt stage he loved every track and every minute. This is a must have CD for every collect. Thoroughly recommended. |
