Well I came to this with little anticipation. Some of the reviews of trhe previews were not great and I was never a huge fan of the original Phantom show or score. But I have to say that this is great. It is very clever at subtly developing themes from the original but not using the obvious melodies. The singing is superb and orchestrations lush. There does seem to be a negative groundswell of people pre-empting the opening tonight in London - my advice is to rid yourself of these thoughts and just listen with an open mind.

Let's be clear, this isn't a rehash of Phantom of the Opera. If one had to compare it's musical style/structure it would closely resemble Sunset Boulevard. The larger, more orchestral songs certainly are arranged in that tone. That sound. Yet there is very desperately an opera trying to get out here. Unusually, for a Lloyd Webber production there is no overture, none of the grand bombastic, organ music of the Phantom overture. Yet there are also shades of the melodies of Phantom, short bars of music are reused but not overused which is a good thing. Certainly the song Love Never Dies reuses music from Our Kind of Love from the lesser popular The Beautiful Game. Journey to the Cemetary used in the movie version of Phantom of the Opera also reappears now and again in snippets of songs. I first heard 'Phantom of the Opera' 18 years ago. I remember buying it as a double cassette tape, when I was 13 years old, and it blew me away. I've loved the show ever since. Because of this, my expectations for 'Love Never Dies' were very high indeed. In fact, after bringing the CD home, I left it on my desk for several hours before I had the courage to listen to it. I was worried that it could never live up to what I expected (and wanted) it to be.
'The Beautiful Game' was truly awful. 'Whistle Down the Wind' was good in places and disappointing in places. 'The Woman in White' was excellent. 'Sunset Boulevard' was fantastic. And what about 'Love Never Dies'?
I think 'Love Never Dies' is absolutely and consistently brilliant. It is better than 'The Woman in White', equal to 'Sunset Boulevard' and almost as good as the original 'Phantom of the Opera'. I have to confess that before buying thi set I knew nothing of Alfven but the famous 1st Rhapsody. I didn't know what I had been missing. It is always difficult to describe a composer to people that don't know him.I could say that Alfven is often like~ Mahler,Strauss and Elgar,but that wouldn't rightly sum up his genius,and would not really being doing him justice.His brand of Swedish lyricism is unique. I would just say that (at this amazing price) go ahead and listen to him for yourself,you won't be disappointed. Given that this set is conducted by Neeme Jarvi and the great Royal Stockholm Philharmonic,what are you waiting for?

Alfven may not be as well known as Sibelius or Nielsen, but his music is strongly melodic and holds your interest. I didn't know anything of Alfven until I heard one of his symphonies on a Naxos CD which made me want to investigate further.
There are five generously filled discs featuring the five symphonies, three Swedish Rhapsodies and other orchestral works. The performances are well recorded (you wouldn't expect anything else on a disc licensed from BIS!) and the whole set is a delight.
At the price it's well worth a look - Brilliant Classics have done another excellent job.

Simply buy this set! Superb craftsmanship serves all the music, from the simpler dance-rhythmic compositions to the profound later symphonies. There is so much to enjoy here and it is all delightfully accessible listening: much emotion, but not sentimental. Great performances from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under Järvi, and beautifully recorded, all for a ludicrously low price. Astonishing!

Beethoven's string quartets contain some of his finest music, in my view. The early Opus 18 quartets retain elements of the classicism of Haydn and Mozart while moving the form into new territory, the wonderful Rasoumovsky Quartets in his middle period have some sublime slow movements and show the real development in Beethoven's music, and the amazing late quartets contain a mixture of the strange, the inspiring and the beautiful as Beethoven's genius reached its final flowering. To have all this in one box is truly wonderful.
The performances by the Alban Berg Quartet are excellent. They date from the early 1980s, were very highly regarded at the time and have aged very well, I think. They are technically excellent, their intonation is flawless and show great insight in interpretation. Very fine cycles have been recorded since by other quartets, but I still listen to these discs with great pleasure and for a great complete cycle at budget price I'd say you couldn't do... Read more

I am so pleased to have been introduced to this set, through other Amazon reviewers among other sources. Pure serene is here in plenty. Also loud and bold, when appropriate. What you don't get is the self-aware virtuoso, individualistic statement that characterises some more recent interpretations. It is also exceptional value, possibly because the presentation is very simple: 7 discs in cardboard sleeves in a box with a booklet. But, hey, you can easily put them in jewel cases from CVB Media. You can even rework them into sets of early, middle etc on iTunes, rather than leave them as the ready-made concert presentation of the collection as it comes. If you like. The main thing is, set aside lots of listening time. No matter how many times you have heard other versions.

I would only hear Beethoven's chamber works on the radio, fleeting moments when I would not concentrate on the music. I guess Beethoven's symphonies have put his chamber music in the shadows. I bought this box set to set aside some time to find out more about this composer's genius. I was not disappointed, these quartets gave me access to the mind of a man with intense emotions and powerful intellect. The symphonies were mere pyrotechnic displays of a showman; but these quartets were something completely different, they were intimate, human and full of loving kindness. Beethoven the humanitarian is clearly at work here and he invites you to occupy this world. The Alban Berg Quartet's is marvellous, I play these again and again. I play them at home and on my MP3 player. What more can I say.
