It is always difficult to describe a composer to people that don't know him.I could say that Alfven is often like~ Mahler,Strauss and Elgar,but that wouldn't rightly sum up his genius,and would not really being doing him justice.His brand of Swedish lyricism is unique. I would just say that (at this amazing price) go ahead and listen to him for yourself,you won't be disappointed. I didn't know anything of Alfven until I heard one of his symphonies on a Naxos CD which made me want to investigate further.There are five generously filled discs featuring the five symphonies, three Swedish Rhapsodies and other orchestral works. The performances are well recorded (you wouldn't expect anything else on a disc licensed from BIS!) and the whole set is a delight. Great performances from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under Järvi, and beautifully recorded, all for a ludicrously low price. Astonishing! |
