Yes, the homage has been done before, so it's of no surprise that Gheorghiu should do the same. Marketing teams must love her.What IS a surprise is the choice of diva and the repertoire. Gheorghiu often sites the sublime Virginia Zeani as a big inspiration, and their voices do have similarities. Callas is a tough act to follow... Here we have a few of Callas' choice roles and I guess what must be a few of Gheorghiu's favourites - for La Boheme, La Wally and especially Faust were never particularly associated with Callas. True, she recorded Boheme complete, but it's one of her less successful recordings. Faust - she only recorded the Jewel Song rather late (and none too successfully)in her career - is a particular oddity. Balancing this we have an aria from Medea (but only the reflective "Dei tuo figli"), the aria from the Pirata mad scene... The blurb on the back-cover of this disc asserts that our "Angela" is "the defining diva of this century", whereas I would concede her a more modest, yet still considerable, status as one of at least three great sopranos active today. Meanwhile, few would contest that Callas was indisputably supreme amongst post-war twentieth century singers and many would anoint her "Greatest Soprano Ever". Thus nervous EMI marketing executives have sought to circumvent the vicissitudes of early twenty-first century economics by banking on the certainties of an era when classical music was a more profitable enterprise, while simultaneously hoping that no-one will seize the opportunity of making invidious comparisons between their current star and her idol.Renée Fleming got away with it in her 2006 Decca recital disc... Following a feature on Angela, with taster tracks, I was spell bound out of bed and ordered a copy from Amazon. I am no stranger to enjoying the power of the voice or choral work and I especially enjoy Verde, I have even ventured to see a production on the odd occasion! But now, from that one radio show and this CD I am transfixed. The power and quality of this ladies voice has drawn me through the speakers to a different world; I have to sit and listen, for all my senses are drawn in together to an experiece that takes me from my physical suroundings and suspends me from each of their threads.
